The word ‘idol’ is mentioned throughout Scripture, but isn’t mentioned too much in today’s culture. In both the Old and New Testament writings, we are instructed over-and-over again to not have idols in our lives; basically directing us to not have anything in our lives that comes between us and God. A Holy God emphatically makes it clear that he insists that we put Him, our relationship, and our way of following Him above all other ambitions and goals in this life. He certainly deserves our utmost effort.
